Livestock Health

Overview

A sick animal eats but does not grow, costs money to treat, and can pass its illness to the whole herd before the farmer even notices. Keeping livestock healthy is therefore one of the most valuable skills in farming, and most of it is prevention rather than cure: a good stockperson spots the first signs of ill health early, knows how diseases and parasites spread, and stops them before they take hold.

In this lesson you will learn to read the signs of health and ill-health in an animal, to explain how infectious and contagious diseases spread and how parasites harm livestock, and to understand why some diseases must be reported to the authorities. You will see how hygiene, clean water and the isolation of sick animals break the chain of infection and keep a herd or flock productive.

Objectives

  1. (a) recognise the signs of health and of ill-health in livestock.
  2. (b) explain the ways in which infectious and contagious diseases are spread.
  3. (c) explain the problems caused by parasites.
  4. (d) explain what is meant by the terms notifiable/scheduled diseases.
  5. (e) explain the importance of livestock hygiene and the isolation of sick animals.

Lesson Note

Health runs through the whole of livestock farming. Cambridge 0600 asks you to recognise the signs of health and ill-health, explain how infectious and contagious diseases are spread, explain the problems caused by parasites, explain notifiable diseases, and explain the importance of hygiene and isolating sick animals. Examiner reports show that strong answers give specific, linked points: a named sign, a clear route of spread, or a control measure tied to the way a disease travels.
